Esports Business and Entertainment, BA

The Esports Business and Entertainment program provides hands-on experience in the multibillion dollar gaming industry.

You will begin on day one with courses in the major, which provides four years of practical skills based learning. The program will immerse you into various components of the field such as business, governance, marketing, communications and event management. Program assignments and projects will include creating content, looking at viewership and how to improve it, live streaming events, all the way to planning and delivering competitions.

Upon completion, you will have gained knowledge and impressive experience that is comparable to those who have been working in the industry.

In an ever-evolving field with increasing opportunities for professional growth, ÃØÉ«´«Ã½â€™s Esports Business and Entertainment program offers the chance to develop a well-rounded skill set and gain exposure to esports in contemporary society. You will learn about business, governance, marketing, event management and health and wellness in esports.

  • Esports majors practice industry skills in association with the varsity Esports team and at hosted tournaments and events. By incorporating actual projects into courses, you will gain hands-on experience.
  • Focusing on one of our two areas of emphasis — Esports Business Development or Esports Marketing — allows you to further tailor your expertise in the areas that interest you most.
  • By the end of the program of study, you will have completed an internship that provides valuable industry experience. Additionally, you will graduate with a polished resume and robust portfolio so that you are better prepared to enter the workforce.

  • BCOR 310:
    Esports Business

    Students will learn about the esports market as a sub-set of the larger gaming industry. The course will explore the different roles of the developer, publisher, esports organizations, and the esports teams, what kinds of investments are relevant to each of those stakeholders, and what their financial concerns are.

  • SM 321:
    Esports Governance

    This course provides an in-depth look at the governance and structure of esports. Students will examine esports leagues, teams, gaming publishers, and current events happening in esports with a focus on the law and ethical adherence to rules governing these competitions.

  • SM 322:
    Esports Marketing

    Students in this course will be given an overview of the esports industry and its connections to the broader entertainment and communication industries. The course will explore the relationship between individual talent (from players to influencers) to professional organizations and the esports companies and how promotions, sponsorship, and marketing strategies can be developed to the benefit of all the stakeholders.

  • ESPT 191:
    College Orientation and Esports Career Exploration

    The course is designed to better prepare learners for the collegiate experience. Participants will learn study best practices, how to navigate the ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ curriculum catalog, and other pertinent information regarding a successful academic career. In addition, students will learn the different career paths within esports, and the necessary skills required to enter the various esports career pathways.

  • ESPT 201:
    Esports in Contemporary Society

    Examination of the current events and societal issues that impact the esports industry. Additionally, students will explore past examples of controversy within esports to determine the outcomes. Participants will utilize past, and current ethical, moral, and philosophical issues to learn how to problem-solve and engage in civil discourse.

  • ESPT 420:
    Esports Event Management

    The course will equip students with the knowledge to plan, organize, and execute esports-related events. Learners will learn the basics of event management through the lens of the emerging esports industry. Concepts such as risk management, marketing, entertainment, and management will be discussed and applied to successfully host an esports event.

  • ESPT 480:
    Esports Senior Capstone: Career Preparation and Readiness

    Students will apply esports knowledge to their collegiate esports experience. Prepares students for careers in esports and related disciplines. Participants will learn best practices in applying for jobs, practice networking with peers and industry professionals, and discuss necessary skills for an esports-related career. Learners will apply esports experience and knowledge to organize/carry out virtual panel to address a topic in esports.

  • ESPT 491:
    Esports Professional Field Experience

    PR: Consent. (May be repeated up to a maximum of 18 hours.) Prearranged experiential learning program, to be planned, supervised, and evaluated for credit by faculty and field supervisors. Involves temporary placement with public or private enterprise for professional competence development.

Additionally, esports is a subsidiary of the greater gaming industry, which continues to grow and boasts more annual revenue than the music and film industries combined.   3. Students gain hands-on experience from internships, class projects, working with the ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ competitive esports team and setting up and hosting tournaments.

The Esports Business and Entertainment major is designed to better prepare learners to fulfill the future roles within the esports industry.

Or, outside of esports, students will be able to apply their knowledge to launch a career in sports, entertainment and other prominent industries.

    Esports in academia is no different, and is growing rapidly at the K-12 and collegiate level! This growth has begun to launch esports career pathways in education that provide ample opportunities for student engagement and skill development. There are now HUNDREDS of job openings in collegiate esports, and K-12 institutions are considering adding additional staff positions to better support their esports initiatives.
