Program Overview

The undergraduate Sport Management curriculum is designed to provide students with the knowledge and experiences necessary to facilitate their movement into employment in the sport industry. Similarly, the Sport Management graduate curriculum was developed to help students gain advancement within the sport industry. Both of these curricula provide students with coursework that is designed to meet the needs of the entry level professional in sport management, as outlined by the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation.

Admission requirements

  • Students must complete an internal application for admission to the accelerated BS/MS (ABM) program.
  • Students may apply for regular admission to the ABM in Sport Management program in the semester following the completion of 60 credits, but not later than the semester after which they have completed 95 credits.
  • Only enrolled ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ Sport Management majors may be considered for regular admission to the ABM program.
  • Transfer students must complete at least 24 credit hours as degree-seeking students at ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ before applying.
  • The minimum GPA requirement for regular admission is 3.0 with no provisional admissions allowed.
  • Regular admission will not be offered to students with less than 2 semesters remaining before completing the bachelor’s degree.
  • The ABM in Sport Management program is not available to students seeking a second (or subsequent) bachelor’s degree.
  • Internal application is due by October 15 with program admissions decisions communicated by December 15. Applications will be reviewed by a faculty work group and presented to the program faculty for a final admissions decision.
  • Capacity is limited to 10 students per admission cycle.

Continuation in the program

Students in the ABM in Sport Management program must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 throughout enrollment in both the graduate and undergraduate programs. Grades from selected courses will count toward the students’ GPA at both the bachelor’s and master’s degree levels for the purposes of determining satisfactory performance.

Unless given specific permission by the Dean’s Office, students admitted to an ABM in Sport Management program must maintain full-time continuous enrollment during fall and spring terms. Enrollment requirements in summer terms include the completion of up to 6 credits per term, primarily at the graduate level. Students admitted to the ABM in Sport Management program may not pursue a dual degree, double major or certificate without approval of the Dean's Office. They may pursue minors and areas of emphasis, as approved by an advisor. Students admitted to the ABM in Sport Management program will not generally be approved for course overloads (more than 17 credits in any term that includes more than one graduate-level course, more than 20 credits in any term that does not include graduate-level courses).

Students’ eligibility to remain in the ABM in Sport Management program will be evaluated at the end of each semester. Students failing to meet program or University standards will be placed on program probation for no more than one semester, after which they will be terminated from the ABM in Sport Management program. Terminated students as well as students who choose not to continue in the ABM degree program will be eligible to receive their bachelor's degree after completing the traditional bachelor’s degree requirements.

Financial aid for ABM students could be impacted. Students are encouraged to meet with a Mountaineer Hub representative to learn more about the impact on their specific financial aid package.

Program of study

The ABM in Sport Management can be completed in four years (including two required summers). Students in the ABM will be permitted to complete courses in the master’s degree program out of the prescribed sequence with approval from their advisor to accelerate time to degree completion.

The courses in the master’s degree program are delivered primarily online, which affords students greater flexibility in managing the costs associated with the additional time invested in their college education.
